A personalized Coming-of-Age gift

A Personalized Book for a Sweet 16

One photo becomes an original illustrated story with them as the hero. At sixteen it has to be about who they are now, and ideally a little funny.

Sixteen is the birthday that comes with a party and, in a lot of families, a set of car keys. It is also the age when almost every gift is a gift card, because nobody wants to guess wrong. A book where they are the hero is a guess too, but it is the one gift in the pile that could only have been made for them.

This is a twelve-page illustrated story drawn from one photo you upload, with up to five characters, each illustrated from their own picture. That last part matters at sixteen: put their best friends in it, the sibling they argue with, the dog. A story full of the people in their life right now is a very different thing from a book about how fast they grew up.

Choose the oldest reading level, and write a premise that is about now: the driving test, the team, the first job, the party itself. Funny tends to land and sentimental tends not to, because a book that is fond of who they were at seven is a gift for the adults, and a sixteen-year-old notices.

Sweet sixteens are celebrated for boys as well as girls, and the book works the same way for either. The digital book is ready to download in minutes, so it can be part of the party even if the printed copy comes afterward.

When It Works at Sixteen

It works when the story is about their life as it is now and is willing to tease them a little. The parallel parking, the group chat, the thing they are obsessed with this year. Sixteen-year-olds enjoy being the hero of something; they do not enjoy being treated as a child.

It works less well as a look back. If what you want is a book about their childhood, make it, but know that it is a gift for you as much as for them, and choose a different moment to give it.

  • Their own face, from one photoThe illustrations are drawn from a photo you upload, so they look like themselves as they are today.
  • Their friends can be in itUp to five characters, each illustrated from their own photo. At this age, the friends are often the point.
  • Written at their levelPick the oldest reading level when you create the story, so the writing does not sound like it is for a small child.

How a book gets made

The first two steps are free. Nothing to install, no card to enter.

1

Describe the Day

The part they practiced for, the people who came, the moment everyone will remember. You write the premise in your own words.

2

Use a Photo They Like

One clear photo, ideally one they chose themselves. Family can join the story too, each illustrated from their own picture.

3

Choose Your Format

A digital book to download in minutes, or a printed keepsake. A dedication page can carry your own words for the day.

Story Ideas That Work Well

You write the premise in your own words. Three that hold up at sixteen.

The Driving Test, Played as an Epic

The permit, the practice, the instructor, the cone that did not survive. Treated as a heroic quest, the most stressful event of their year becomes the funniest.

The Party That Almost Didn't Happen

The theme, the guest list, the cake disaster, the friend who saved the night. A story about the party itself is a perfect thing to hand out at the end of it.

The Friend Group, Sent Somewhere Ridiculous

Them and their people, each illustrated as themselves, on an adventure that makes sense only to them. This is the version that gets shown to everyone.

How Not to Get This Wrong

  1. 1

Use a photo they already like

Sixteen-year-olds have strong opinions about pictures of themselves. Pick one from their own camera roll, front-facing and well lit.

  2. 2

    Put the inside jokes in

Nicknames, the running joke, the thing they always say. Affectionate teasing reads as love at this age. Sentimentality about their childhood reads as embarrassing.

  3. 3

    Consider digital first

The digital book is ready to download in minutes. Some families give the digital version at the party and order the printed copy once they have seen the reaction.

Common questions

Isn't sixteen too old for a picture book?

For a sentimental one, often yes. For a funny one about their current life, usually not. The format is the same either way, so the story you write decides how it lands.

Can their friends be in the book?

Yes. Up to five characters can appear in total, each illustrated from their own photo, so friends, siblings, and pets can be drawn as themselves.

Is it only for girls?

No. Sweet sixteens are celebrated for boys too, and the book is written around whoever the hero is.

What if the illustrations don't look like them?

The preview includes three free redraws shared across the cover and the two free pages, so you can steer it before paying. Unlocking the full story adds at least 15 more redraw credits, spendable on any page or the cover.

Can it be ready for the party?

The digital book is ready to download in minutes. Printed books are printed after you order and then shipped, so allow time for both if you want the printed copy at the party.

Our family: Delilah, Mia, and Dad reading together

From our family to yours

We are a family business in Las Vegas, named after our daughters, Delilah and Mia. We built this for young children, then watched people make books for teenagers and grown-ups and learned the most from those. Our advice for sixteen is what we would tell a friend: make it about now, put their people in it, and let it be funny.
