Use two separate, clear photos
A photo of the two of you together is a worse reference than one good photo of each. Each character reads from their own picture, so a front-facing, well-lit, unobstructed shot of each person gives the strongest likeness.
Be specific and slightly unflattering
The details that make a partner laugh are rarely the flattering ones. The car that did not start, the meal you burned, the argument about the map. Write those in and the book stops sounding like a greeting card.
Decide early whether it needs to be printed
The digital version arrives by email within minutes, which is enough if the date is tomorrow. A printed copy needs 5 to 7 business days to produce before shipping, so about two weeks of lead time keeps it calm.
